My daughter came across this article about a new train in Charlotte NC put there by the Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway Company. The Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway Company Engine 271 and passenger cars are parked on a siding track near 34th Street. Among the train cars: An open-air car with high-top tables, and two first-class passenger cars. Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway Company, or the ACWR as its abbreviated, hopes to turn this train into a venue for private events and business gatherings. "We wanted to bring a unique experience to Charlotte. Having a new venue like this... could be a good fit," Jennifer White, president of the railroad, explained. "NoDa is very trendy... and our railroad tracks go right through it." The train features social space, including an indoor bar car and an outdoor car, which was converted from an old "maintainance of way vehicle" once used to build and maintain the railroad. White said a team at the company's Candor-based headquarters has been restoring cars for the train. Some of the cars come from the company's vintage stock, while others were acquired from other companies or rescued from abandoned sidings. Founded in 1987, the ACWR is a shortline railroad operating 150 miles of tracks in North Carolina. While most of ACWR's business is moving freight, they're hoping the private passenger train service could be their next venture. In the short term, the train will stay parked along the company's tracks in NoDa. In the near future, they hope to rent out the train. The railroad's western terminus is in Charlotte, where it connects to the large rail yard operated by Norfolk Southern. At their eastern edge, they connect to the rail network operated by CSX. To see the train in NoDa, navigate to approximately 440 E 36th St in Charlotte. The Spotsylvania Towne Centre event will be held from 12-13 November 2022. We will run the O-gauge modular layout and the N-gauge modular layout and sell raffle tickets as we are able. We will also bring the wooden train table for young engineers to play with. We need someone to pull the white trailer. We need a setup and take down crew as well as enough engineers to cover both days. I setup one hour time slots, so there are a lot of times available to those who didn't get to run at Shannon Airport. Setup will be Friday 11 November at 9 am (use Guitar Center entrance). We will run trains Saturday 12 November from 10 am to 9pm and Sunday 13 November from 11 am to 5 pm. Take down will begin at 5 pm on Sunday and we must vacate the Mall by 7 pm. O-gauge: A signup sheet is posted on the website under the Members menu. Please let me know if you are bringing your module. We plan to bring a 20' x 32' O-gauge layout as we did last year, so we will need a number of modules I have added a Dispatcher line to the signup sheet online. N-gauge: Contact Linda Garrett about plans and runtimes. Questions, just ask.

We will be having our Fall Open House on 17 September from 10am to 4pm. For this event we open our clubhouse to the public in hopes of generating interest in model railroading and RMR. Members should arrive by 8am to help with setup. We also have a cookout-potluck lunch. Spouses and family members are welcome to attend. If you see new faces come in, please make sure someone greets them and lets them know they are free to look around and answer any questions. There are printed cards with our remaining schedule and our Train Show flyer to be given out to the public. Also, if you are outside and see a car looking for a place to park, please see if you can help. Runtimes are available on the Clubhouse O-gauge layout. The signup sheet is on the website under the Members menu. There are still a few runtimes available. The N-gauge group will be bringing their layout. Contact Linda Garrett if you would like to run N-gauge. A signup sheet is available for food and supplies for the cookout on the website under the Members menu. It looks like we need some coolers and could use some more side dishes. Parking is always a challenge at the club house. Members should park at either the VAMAC Plumbing visitor lot on Hudgins Rd or at the far end of the parking lot behind the gate, which the lot owner has given us access to. Pull up to the clubhouse and unload first, then park in one of these areas.

The Blue Ridge Tunnel was built largely by Irish immigrants who were desperate for work after leaving Ireland during the time of the potato famine. It was built for the Blue Ridge Railroad (later the C&O) to connect Richmond to the Ohio River. Here is a link to a YouTube video on construction of the tunnel and its restoration as a walking path. https://irishcultureva.org/2021/03/20/the-tunnel/

RMR Members, Below is the information that James put together on Amazon Smile that allows RMR to get a percentage of what Amazon makes on your orders. His instructions below apply to the Amazon website. For the Amazon App, on my iPhone I needed to separately signup for Amazon Smile and select RMR. Select the menu bars, select Gifting and Charity, then select Amazon Smile. Search for Rappahannock Model Railroaders and make sure Modile App generating donations is set to ON. Note: I see that I have to renew the giving to RMR twice a year (at least in the app). ----- Forwarded Message ----- Just wanted to share how to get Amazon to donate .5% of all your purchases back to RMR. Want to support Rappahannock Model Railroaders by doing something you already probably do??? You probably already have an Amazon account but may not be familiar with AmazonSmile. AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices, and shopping features as Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization of your choice. Every item available for purchase on www.amazon.com is also available on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com) at the same price. You will see eligible products marked "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation" on their product detail pages. So consider shopping at smile.amazon.com and select Rappahannock Model Railroaders as your charity of choice.

On a vacation visit to Charlotte to see my daughter, I encountered the below. First, the Trolley Barn, a brewery-restaurant that was build from- you guessed it, an old Trolley Barn. In the picture below you can still see the rails in the floor that lead from the Railtrail into the building. The Railtrail is a walking-jogging path that leads from Charlotte Uptown to the South End where we were staying. Their is also a light rail running next to the Railtrail. Charlotte seems to have a lot of old industrial buildings that have been repurposed into new businesses such as bars, breweries and restaurants. Next, we went for an exercise walk in a city park only to find the Gainesville Midland #301 locomotive. The sign explains it was built in 1929 and donated by Seaboard in 1959.
