The Blue Ridge Tunnel was built largely by Irish immigrants who were desperate for work after leaving Ireland during the time of the potato famine. It was built for the Blue Ridge Railroad (later the C&O) to connect Richmond to the Ohio River. Here is a link to a YouTube video on construction of the tunnel and its restoration as a walking path. https://irishcultureva.org/2021/03/20/the-tunnel/

RMR Members, Below is the information that James put together on Amazon Smile that allows RMR to get a percentage of what Amazon makes on your orders. His instructions below apply to the Amazon website. For the Amazon App, on my iPhone I needed to separately signup for Amazon Smile and select RMR. Select the menu bars, select Gifting and Charity, then select Amazon Smile. Search for Rappahannock Model Railroaders and make sure Modile App generating donations is set to ON. Note: I see that I have to renew the giving to RMR twice a year (at least in the app). ----- Forwarded Message ----- Just wanted to share how to get Amazon to donate .5% of all your purchases back to RMR. Want to support Rappahannock Model Railroaders by doing something you already probably do??? You probably already have an Amazon account but may not be familiar with AmazonSmile. AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices, and shopping features as Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization of your choice. Every item available for purchase on www.amazon.com is also available on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com) at the same price. You will see eligible products marked "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation" on their product detail pages. So consider shopping at smile.amazon.com and select Rappahannock Model Railroaders as your charity of choice.

The RMR Annual Train show will be held 11-12 December at the Fraternal Order of Eagles 21 Cool Spring Rd Fredericksburg VA 22405. For this event, we need all RMR members help to perform the various jobs needed for a successful show. Nick George is maintaining a list of all the show jobs needing to be done including: vendor table setup, vendor check-in, admissions, raffle ticket sales, kids corner and floor walker. We need someone to pull the white trailer and someone to help with loading and hookup at the clubhouse. Signups for the O-gauge layout are on the website. The N-gauge team will work signups among themselves.

On a vacation visit to Charlotte to see my daughter, I encountered the below. First, the Trolley Barn, a brewery-restaurant that was build from- you guessed it, an old Trolley Barn. In the picture below you can still see the rails in the floor that lead from the Railtrail into the building. The Railtrail is a walking-jogging path that leads from Charlotte Uptown to the South End where we were staying. Their is also a light rail running next to the Railtrail. Charlotte seems to have a lot of old industrial buildings that have been repurposed into new businesses such as bars, breweries and restaurants. Next, we went for an exercise walk in a city park only to find the Gainesville Midland #301 locomotive. The sign explains it was built in 1929 and donated by Seaboard in 1959.

The Spotsylvania Towne Centre event will be held from 13-14 November 2021. We will run the O-gauge modular layout and the N-gauge modular layout and sell raffle tickets as we are able. Mike McVeigh has agreed to pull the white trailer. We need someone to help him with loading and trailer hookup at the club house. We need a setup and take down crew as well as enough engineers to cover both days. Setup will be Friday 12 November at 8 am (use Guitar Center entrance). We will run trains Saturday 13 November from 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday 14 November from 11 am to 5 pm. Take down will begin at 5 pm on Sunday and we must vacate the Mall by 7 pm. A signup sheet is posted on the website under the Members menu. Please let me know if you are bringing your module. So far, I have: Mike R- corner, straight (Carnival); Phil Shaw-2 straight. We could also use a dispatcher or two for Saturday. I have added a Dispatcher line to the signup sheet online.

We will be having our Fall Open House on 18 September from 10am to 4pm. For this event we open our clubhouse to the public in hopes of generating interest in model railroading and RMR. We also have a cookout-potluck lunch. Spouses and family members are welcome to attend. Runtimes are be available on the Clubhouse O-gauge layout. The signup sheet is on the website under Members/Open House Runtimes. The N-gauge group will be bringing their layout. Contact Linda Garrett if you would like to run N-gauge. A signup sheet is available for food and supplies for the cookout under the Members menu. Parking is always a challenge at the club house- we will work with our neighbors to free space, look for an update on parking. We will hold a cleanup day in advance of the Open House on 16 September 0930. Those wishing to will meet at the Four Seasons Restaurant at 0800 for breakfast. Sweeping, vacuuming and track cleaning are needed before hosting visitors. Questions, just ask. Dennis Cole First VP RMR

We are confirmed with New City Fellowship Church to conduct an event on Saturday 19 June 2021 from 10a-4p. We will be setting up the modular layout and running trains for church members and guests as a way to thank them for the use of their hall for our meetings. If you would like to bring you module, please let me know. Otherwise, we will be using what is currently in the white trailer. We will need someone to pull the white trailer to and from the event. I thought this article (link below) on paint schemes and considerations for painting Amtrak trains was interesting. It also includes a little bit of Amtrak history: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/amtrak-paint-designs?utm_source=Atlas+Obscura+Daily+Newsletter&utm_campaign=a4043322c7-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2021_04_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f36db9c480-a4043322c7-64535157&mc_cid=a4043322c7&mc_eid=6944ca5eb8
